CHAMBER of Commerce vice-president Mark Trenchard has rejected suggestions that the quality of candidates for the general election was not up to scratch. Former Chamber president Simon Howitt said that ‘there are probably too few who are willing and able to take an active role on a committee and actually achieve anything in that role’.
But Mr Trenchard said: ‘Chamber is pleased to see a number of new names and young blood coming forward.
‘It will be interesting to see the overall quality of those nominations, but the fact is there are a number of new faces as well as many existing States members providing a degree of continuity as we enter the new period of government.’
There were also concerns about the number of business people coming forward. Doubling members’ pay and changing the system of government seemed to have done little to attract candidates.
Mr Howitt, who, as Chamber president, backed the reform plans, was disappointed, but not surprised, at the lack of business leaders coming forward.
But Mr Trenchard still backed the changes that were made.
‘Whether those standing for the first time are attracted principally by the higher remuneration is not clear.
‘However, Chamber remains supportive of paying States members an amount that is reflective of the importance of the position held.
‘Chamber will be monitoring with interest the run-up to the elections and urges the people of Guernsey to support the new government by voting.’
