Education and training the keys to the future

THE island has a finance workforce that is well educated and ready to tackle the challenges ahead. But Chris Robinson, the new president of the Institute of Financial Services, said more co-operation between agencies could further improve staff skills.

‘There are challenges ahead for the finance industry but we are well placed through our skilled and experienced staff to meet them,’ said Mr Robinson.

‘We have been very successful in improving the skills of the workforce and I am keen to continue the education and training of the banking and finance staff.’

Mr Robinson said that there would be closer co-operation between the IFS, the Training Agency and the Guernsey Business School. There will be jointly held conferences on professional development this month and next.

Mr Robinson, chief executive of Bristol & West International locally, has replaced Bachmann associate director Peter Daniels as institute president.

‘I see the main aim of the IFS to improve the education, training and development of the workforce,’ said Mr Daniels.

‘During the last year we have run a number of events to support members’ development and organised social gatherings to bring people from the industry together.

‘Everyone has been talking about the need for a well-educated workforce and through a joint effort with the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, the agency and the school, we have been help to assist in development.’

Speaking at the IFS annual general meeting, States chief executive Mike Brown outlined the new machinery of government.

‘We have always worked well with government but look forward to increasing the work with both the States and the industry regulator, the GFSC,’ said Mr Robinson.
