Garland to headline first multi-eventer

DALE GARLAND will be the main attraction at the Channel Islands’ first multi-event athletics competition. The event, to be staged on the last Sunday of August, will feature athletes from Guernsey and Jersey, as well as a group of invited guests from the UK. It has been made possible through generous sponsorship and support from the Royal Bank of Canada (Channel Islands) Ltd.

The multi-event competition will cover the disciplines of running, throwing and jumping. The performance of each athlete will be scored according to International Amateur Athletics Federation tables as used in standard decathlon and heptathlon competitions.

The guest athletes are all students at Bath University, where they train alongside the Channel Islands’ top decathlete, Dale Garland.

It promises to be a very competitive event as many of last year’s Island Games athletes will be taking part as a prelude to the annual inter-insular match the following week.

‘This is the sort of meeting that allows all our athletes to compete against athletes from the other islands and also top class competitors from the UK. This is invaluable in terms of gaining experience,’ said Terry Bates, Guernsey’s athletics development officer.

Younger athletes, right down to the under-11s, will also be competing. They will take part in a team event in which individual performances will be averaged to give a team result.

The event will take place at the Foote’s Lane stadium on Sunday 29 August, starting at midday.
