GUERNSEY’S Final Hour appeal has raised enough money to feed more than one million people in Sudan for a day.More than £170,000 was donated by islanders who wanted to help the people of the Darfur region.
It was collected through the Bailiff’s Disaster Emergency Relief Fund and the Final Hour Appeal, which he also backed, and means that tons of food and other essentials will be sent to the stricken region.
‘I am delighted with the response to this appeal - it is well beyond our expectations when it was launched,’ said Sir de Vic Carey.
‘I am full of admiration and thanks for the support the appeal has received. The collective effort from the people of Guernsey has been quite superb.’
The scale of the appeal has been staggering. On a pro-rata basis, it would be equivalent to the UK donating £170m. and has delighted organisers and supporters.
Conflict in the western region of Darfur has led to the death of tens of thousands of people and created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The Final Hour Appeal was the idea of Richard Searle and was launched by the Guernsey Press and Island FM.
It urged people to donate their last hour’s pay from August to raise money for the people of Sudan and in excess of 295 companies employing more than 14,200 people signed up.
‘It is not always easy to get public support for such causes but it was an excellent idea which had very strong support from the media,’ said the Bailiff.
His fund will remain open for further donations until Christmas.
All the money for the Final Hour Appeal has now been collected and it officially closes today.
Mr Searle’s sister, Amanda, is working in the country as an aid volunteer.
‘I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who contributed to raising so much money,’ said Mr Searle.
‘People gave their wages, people made donations and companies gave one-off amounts or decided to match the amount raised by staff - I would like to thank them for reaching a total that was well beyond our initial expectations.’
Mr Searle was grateful for the support of his office, BDO Guernsey, the marketing team at Wallace Barnaby and the backing of the Guernsey Press and Island FM.
‘I am absolutely amazed and delighted at the final amount raised,’ said Island FM managing director Gary Burgess.
‘We knew that it was a good idea and that the people of Guernsey would be generous but the final figure is beyond our wildest dreams,’ a view echoed by Guernsey Press editor Richard Digard.
He added: ‘I am delighted that we were able to play a part in a project that has raised so much money to help alleviate the pain and suffering of the people in Sudan and has drawn islanders together in support of a common aim.’ Thanks a million - to all the companies involved in the Final Hour Appeal
