CABLE & WIRELESS has invested several million pounds in extra bandwidth capacity between Guernsey and the UK. The money spent in the undersea cable system will benefit e-business in the Bailiwick and bring extra security.
The company is also spending £1m. a year renewing underground cables, some of which date to before the Second World War.
‘What we have done is created a huge increase in bandwidth,’ said director of marketing Jim Coupe.
‘To illustrate the scale, it could handle more than 5,000 additional phone calls at the same time or support Internet surfing by broadband from every household in the Bailiwick and every Guernsey mobile at the same time.’
Two cables taking different routes mean that in the event of one of them developing a fault or being damaged, the other will maintain a service, he added.
Industry and Commerce Department director Stuart Le Maitre welcomed the new development.
‘With the increasing use of technology in the way we transact with our customers, it is vitally important to Guernsey businesses that we have links with the UK that are of the highest quality, in terms of both capacity and security,’ he said.
Investment in the underground network has involved replacing old lead cables with modern, efficient and more reliable ones.
Work is being conducted on a rolling programme and is currently being carried out in St Peter Port, Baubigny and other areas and as much as possible is being done without digging up the roads.
