Hundreds sign up for ‘Final Hour’ appeal

GUERNSEY Post staff delivered a message of hope to the people of Darfur in the Sudan yesterday. Some 300 employees from the commercialised utility are set to sign up for the Final Hour appeal - launched yesterday morning by the Guernsey Press and Island FM - raising thousands of pounds of aid for crisis-torn Sudan.

Guernsey Post was one of 13 firms who immediately announced on the appeal’s opening day that they would join the appeal, where staff are asked to donate the pay from their final working hour of the month. Together the companies signed up employ more than 500 people.

‘We were quick off the mark - no surprise when we’ve got the radio on all the time,’ said operations manager Bill Harrison this morning as the postal workers sorted before delivery.

‘Most of the staff here will go for it. They are pretty good this lot - if there’s anything for charity they will usually join in.’

Appeal organiser Richard Searle said he was very happy with the interest and response to the appeal.

‘We’ve had a number of inquiries too from people who want to put pressure on their employers to join in the appeal,’ he said.

‘That’s what we need - staff to encourage employers and vice versa. I’m looking forward to a hugely successful appeal of which Guernsey can be proud.’

Guernsey Press editor Richard Digard said: ‘This has got the whole campaign off to an outstanding start. It just goes to show what we thought, that people in Guernsey would respond generously to such an appeal. And, as the news today shows, there is a pressing need for more funds and more aid to be sent out there.’
