TWO of the divisional yellow jersey wearers found themselves playing catch-up on the L’Ancresse Common cross-country course on day four of the Abacus All-Terrain Challenge series. John Stuart, who has appeared for Guernsey in badminton at both Island and Commonwealth games level, just hangs onto the Division Four leadership although on this occasion he had to to settle for third place over the 10 laps of the 600m course.
Andy Carre has narrowed Stuart’s lead significantly after taking more than a minute out of Stuart with a well-paced performance.
The 16-year-old seems to be getting better as the week goes on and with three races to go is likely to push Stuart all the way to finish in Herm on Friday.
Earl Manning came into the Division Three race with the overall lead, but had to settle for fifth place last evening when Stephen Hunt breezed to an easy win and took over top spot.
In contrast, the top two divisional races provided clear and easy winners in Steve Dawes (One) and Ashley Ward (Two).
Both men hit the front from the start and left the opposition in no doubt as to who was bossing the series.
Behind Ward, mountain-bike specialist Danny Shaw came through strongly to take second place while Nick Loveridge snatched third in a desperate uphill sprint from Roy Stanford and Simon Ingrouille.
Just behind them top woman Louise Perrio virtually dead-heated with Terry Bates and Gordon Mercier.
In the junior race over 3k of the same course Matt Loveridge stretched his lead, while Danny Carre took over second spot with a fine run.
The series moves this evening to Foote’s Lane for 800m track races.
