Glenfruin tops record fleet

GLENFRUIN beat off a record entry to win the Guernsey to Alderney Carey Olsen Trophy race. The bilge-keel yacht skippered by Guernseyman David Herschel arrived in Alderney five hours and two minutes after it had set off, taking first place ahead of the 44 other entries. That was in comparison to 23 yachts last year and 18 in 2002.

The event was a pursuit with handicaps set at the beginning and the absence of wind an hour after the first to start set off favoured the slower boats and led to a very sporting competition.

Glenfruin, which had left at 10.05 and finished at 15.07, was closely followed home by Rival Errant skippered by Ted McDonaugh with Andrew Willis bringing Condor of Braye in third.

There were also prizes for the first yachts from Alderney and Jersey, the first family one and the Carey Olsen special paddle, which was awarded to Tantrum skippered by Angela Langley.

‘This year Carey Olsen was overwhelmed with the fantastic response from Guernsey, Jersey, England and France of crews wishing to take part in the race to Alderney,’ said Mike Eades, partner at Carey Olsen.
