JACKIE WHARTON has landed a Pacific king salmon almost as big as she is. The Guernsey resident was on a fishing trip on the Kenai River in Alaska when she hooked the monster.
She was fishing on a 30lb line and it took an hour to land the fish, which took her more than a mile downriver. ‘I caught a splendid 41lb salmon in the morning, only to be completely upstaged by Jackie. Her fish was so fresh, it still had sea lice,’ said husband Ric, chairman of Boatworks+.
The bigger fish was exactly the same weight as the largest-ever salmon caught in the British Isles.
‘That was an Atlantic salmon caught on the River Tay by a Mrs Ballantyne in the 20s,’ he said.
The world-record salmon of 97.5lbs was caught on the Kenai River in the 60s.
