CIAC earn deserved first win

GEMMA TINGAY, Kylie Robilliard and Kimberley Gleeson played leading roles as the Ansbacher Channel Islands Athletic Club won their first-ever match in Division One of the Southern Women’s League. ‘It’s the stuff dreams are made of,’ said a delighted Andrew Winnie who had taken a heavily-depleted senior squad to Reading for the fifth match of six.

CIAC’s unexpected victory lifted them to fifth place among the 25 teams competing at the top level and seems to have guaranteed them a top-10 finish in their first season in the highest division.

Winnie was delighted with the win and with athlete-of-the-match Tingay, who despite being a first-year under-17, won two senior events and set three personal bests on the day.

‘What I have noticed about her is that she is one of the most willing athletes.

‘She listens to more-experienced athletes - she got some tips from Lauren Therin on the day - and she picks things up so quickly. She achieves PBs almost every time.’

Tingay produced new bests in the shot and javelin as well as the 400m hurdles which she volunteered to contest due to the lack of seniors.

She actually led for half the race before fading to finish fourth.

Robilliard returned to competitive hurdling for the first time since her English Schools fall and despite a tentative start came through to win.

This weekend she competes at the AAA championships.

But nobody scored more points than Gleeson, who completed a fine 100, 200 and long jump treble.
