Building for the future

CONSTRUCTION of the new sixth-form centre has started as hundreds of local students await the outcome of their A and AS-level exams tomorrow. Careers advisers will be on hand to talk about options in education, training and employment and to give support for students considering university or going through the clearing process. UK experts are predicting that there will be another record-breaking pass rate.

GCSE results will be released in a week’s time.

‘The great thing about speaking to a careers adviser is that they will have already met most students during Year 11 and they can provide guidance about all the options and help them make realistic choices,’ said careers adviser Sarah Stonebridge.

‘Parents have a part to play in the process too so it is essential they are up to date with what is on offer and how to support their son or daughter with their decisions.’

More than 400 students will hear their fate tomorrow morning at the Grammar School. Even more are expected to continue their studies post-16 in future years and from September next year, they will be taught in a new £5.58m., 1,700sq metre centre.

‘Things have been pretty squashed at the Grammar School over the past few years,’ said director of sixth-form studies Tina Watson.

‘More and more young people are recognising the benefits of staying in full-time education post-16 and being able to study the broad range of subjects we offer at the Grammar School.

‘We are expecting to have our largest-ever sixth form when the new term starts in September. The completion of the new centre will certainly ease the pressure and provide our students with much-needed independent study and social areas, as well as additional specialist classrooms for media studies, psychology, business studies and sport science.’

R.G. Falla is the main contractor for the work.

The utilities have already been on site diverting the water main and extending the main gas network.

The eventual redevelopment of the College of Further Education on the St Peter Port School site will also enable students to mix and match their academic studies at the Grammar School with more vocational qualifications at the new college.

Funding for building the first phase of the new College of Further Education, comprising a hall and performing arts centre, was agreed in February, with construction due to start early next year and be completed by September 2006.

* Careers advisers will be at the Grammar School on Friday 27 August between 9.30am and 12.30pm, or are available at the Careers Service on Mondays to Fridays from 8.30am to 5pm.

An appointment should be booked on 733044.
