L’Ancresse stand firm

L’ANCRESSE enjoy home advantage in Sunday’s CI final of the Hampshire Sevens, even though perhaps they should not have it. An administrative error by the Hampshire Golf Union has seen Guernsey handed the final, although indisputably it was Jersey’s turn to stage it.

Mike Hamon, the L’Ancresse first-team captain, confirmed there had been unsettling negotiations in the build-up to the clash with Jersey champions Les Mielles, but he did not wish to add any wood to the fire.

But Les Mielles captain Simon Allchin says his team feel hard done by and that their chances of progressing in the competition have been hit.

‘It’s been a nightmare three weeks trying to sort out the venue.

‘It’s played alternately in Jersey and Guernsey and this year it should have been Jersey’s turn to host,’ said Allchin.

‘But Hampshire made a mistake with the venue because of a change of secretary and despite the Jersey Golf Union getting involved, we still have to go to Guernsey because L’Ancresse won’t budge,’ he added.

L’Ancresse, it seems, are content to go along with the Hampshire Golf Union’s decision and follow the draw sheet which, all along, has shown that Guernsey would stage the final.

Hamon will pick his final seven from a 10-man squad and is quietly confident.

‘I’m hopeful but not overconfident because it is off handicap.’

Perhaps crucially, most of the Les Mielles team have not played the L’Ancresse links before.

The match features seven head-to-head singles and starts at 8.30am.
