August dominated by Couch’s sea bream

COUCH’S sea bream won all five top awards in the August fish of the month competition. Lynton Carre won the Shakespeare Monthly Angling Prize for the best overall fish and the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the top shore-caught fish with his 2-15-1 specimen which scored 122.04%.

The Royal Fathomers AC Tankard went to Colin Truffitt for his 4-8-2 fish which was worth 100.78%.

The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass beers went to Scott Rowe for his 2-7-11 shore-caught fish 102.92% and Sam Robins for his 2-5-13 shore-caught specimen 98.05%.

It’s the first time in the competition’s 38-year history that all the top prizes have gone to the same species.

Leslie Bates submitted the only visitor’s entry, his 2-5-15 boat-caught mackerel scoring 56.94% to give him the Megabite Tankard.

Joe Le Gallez won the Aval du Creux Hotel junior prize for his 5-4-8 boat-caught ballan wrasse worth 65.50%.

The unsuccessful entries were:

Alan Broe-Bougourd, 1-9-6 boat-caught cuckoo wrasse, 80.87%; Mike Weysom, 3-1-6 shore-caught common eel, 78.06%; Nicholas Hannah, 4-15-8 boat-caught black bream, 74.64%; Steve Le Cloarec, 26-4-0 boat-caught blonde ray, 72.60%; Joe Gomez, 3-9-3 boat-caught black bream, 53.69%; Owen Godwin, 9-2-0 boat-caught bass, 49.53%; Holly Petit, 1-5-3 boat-caught garfish, 47.81%; Callum McLaren, 1-4-4 shore-caught golden grey mullet, 41.96%.

Mark Giles is keeping the Couch’s sea bream theme going because he has entered a 4-3-8 boat-caught fish in the September competition. It was caught on a sandeel bait in the Little Russel and will be judged against the 4-7-9 Bailiwick boat record.

Paris Broe-Bougourd has entered a boat-caught three-bearded rockling. It was tempted by a ragworm bait on a mark off Herm and weighed 1-6-9. It will be assessed against the 1-11-8 boat best.

Bob Elliston has submitted a 4-8-3 black bream. This was boated south of Guernsey after the bream had taken the cuttlefish bait presented on paternoster terminal tackle. It will be judged against the 6-10-8 boat record.

THE Western Tackle Supplies Children’s Open, organised by the Bailiwick Bass Club, was won by Alain Branquet with a 2-6-3 ballan wrasse.

The two-hour event, held on the St Peter Port breakwater, attracted 24 youngsters and 15 found fish to bring to the weigh-in.

The total catch consisted of 24 ballan wrasse, one garfish and one pollack. The competition was decided on each competitor’s heaviest fish.

Amber Vinning came second, her wrasse pulling the scales down to 2-3-1.

Third was Bailey Truly with a 2-1-0 wrasse. The winner won a road and the runner-up a real.

Prizes of miscellaneous tackle were given to all competitors from third down to 11th place.

All the prizes were presented to the winners by Gary Robilliard from Western Tackle Supplies.

It was very satisfying to see the juniors participating in this event.

More must be done to encourage youngsters with the sport and while competitions such as this go some way in meeting that requirement, clubs should take an active role in involving our young anglers in their activities.

GUERNSEY Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society members entered 18 shore-caught and nine boat-caught bass in the society’s competitions during August.

It’s getting very tight at the top of the shore championship list. Karl Prevost clung on to his top position by virtue of topping the catch list for the month. He had four fish for 17-1-0, comprising one of 5-4-0, two of 4-0-0 and a 3-13-0 specimen.

The top bass of the month was the 7-15-0 specimen landed by Carl Foulds, who also had two of 4-2-0.

Brian Montgomery had three for 12-12-8, Dean Tulie two for 10-2-0, Tom Brock two for 7-14-8, Gavin Arnold two for 7-8-0, Paul Clark one of 4-5-0 and Simon Russell one of 3-4-0.

Jean Prout has a substantial lead in the boat championship and consolidated his position by topping the boat catch list.

He had four for 24-15-12, fish of 7-12-4, 6-5-4, 5-12-4 and 5-2-0. Neil Black had three 7-0-0, 5-8-12 and 5-8-0, Steve Le Cloarec one of 5-2-0 and Alex Adams one of 7-6-0.

Tom Brock won the society’s annual Herm match, but for the second year in succession catches were disappointing. Only two bass over the club’s size limit were caught, Brock’s winning fish weighing 7-6-8.

Other fish landed were a small bull huss, a couple of lesser-spotted dogfish and a turbot which took a free lined sandeel.
