Air display needs cash to continue

NEXT year’s Battle of Britain air display could be in jeopardy unless more sponsors can be found. The current deal for some of the consortium of 24 businesses that back the event has expired. Ten sponsors have signed up again, but more are needed.

Consortium chairman Michael Perrett said he was optimistic that extra funding would be forthcoming.

‘I’m certain there’s enough support in the business community to ensure the continuation of this spectacular show and demonstrate its commitment to our island heritage and future,’ he said.

‘We are not asking companies to commit to thousands of pounds each year. The idea of a consortium is to spread the costs - the more who lend their support, the lower the cost for each business.’

Royal Air Forces’ Association Guernsey branch president Alan Brunger said that the display was vital for the organisation’s fund-raising in support of ex-servicemen and women. This year, a bucket collection alone raised £8,000.

‘If the air display were to end, not only would the charity suffer but so would the tourism sector and the wider business community. It is impossible to put a figure on the value of the Battle of Britain air display for islanders.’
