Upgrading CCTV is under way

THE BRIDGE should have its new, improved CCTV by the end of the year. The Home Department applied in March for planning consent to install four cameras and to erect a 10ft-high tower with a microwave dish transmitter. It got the go-ahead earlier this month.

Mark Lempriere, Home strategy and projects coordinator, said that the cameras would enhance public and maritime safety and law and order.

‘Traders and the public have been saying for quite a long time that there should be more CCTV coverage on the Bridge,’ he said.

‘It just takes time to get everybody on board, but we are there now.

‘It can only be good news for the public.’

The erection and installation works are set to cost £58,000.

Mr Lempriere said the exact positioning of the cameras was still to be confirmed, but at the moment the plans included one looking out over the roundabout area from the North Side, while another would look out from above the Shoestring store.

A third camera is to be positioned on the clock tower at South Side, while a special maritime one with night-time capability would look out to sea from Mont Crevelt.

‘Preparation work such as the wiring has already started, but not the actual installation - that will begin very shortly,’ said Mr Lempriere.

‘There are a few minor issues still subject to planning approval, which involve the camera sites and a matter of feet in their positioning, but we hope to finish the project by the end of the year.’

The cameras will be available for use by the police, Customs and the Harbour Authority.

‘The police will have complete access to them at the station and they will be operated and recorded in the same manner as the ones in Town and be used as evidence in cases if requested.’

The microwave dish transmitter is needed to send the CCTV signals back to the police station.

The Home Department is also looking at making an additional application for a further CCTV camera at North Side.
