Cruise ship death probed by police

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into the death of a Filipino crewman from the visiting cruise ship, Thomson Celebration. The 39-year-old, who has not been named, died from injuries sustained in an accident when one of the ship’s tenders was about to be hoisted onto the vessel shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday.

The victim was taken ashore by a tender and by ambulance to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police boarded the ship to take statements.

The vessel, which had stayed anchored off the island, left for Southampton last night.

‘All I can say is that initial investigations seem to indicate that there were no suspicious circumstances,’ said Inspector Roger Robilliard.

He said the man had suffered serious chest injuries.

Police have notified the ship’s agents in Cyprus and the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch.

The man’s body remains in the island while investigations are continuing.

No one at Thomson was available to comment.

Sark Shipping handled the ship’s visit. A spokesman declined to comment.

Thomson Celebration arrived from Brest on Tuesday morning carrying 1,221 mostly British passengers and a crew of 521. The vessel can carry up to 1,280 passengers.

The island visit was the penultimate stop on its week-long cruise.

Inspector Robilliard said any inquest would be held here. ‘An inquest may well be requested,’ he added.
