Desperques misses golden opportunity

FOR an unprecedented fifth season running, Martyn Desperques has registered a century break in the league, but he was not singing from the rooftops afterwards. A league record 140 was on when he missed and he was disappointed not to have made the most of the record opportunity.

‘It could of and should of,’ he said yesterday, reflecting on a majestic 118 against Sammy Ward.

The score fell an agonising 11 short of beating his own competitive best of 128 set almost a year ago.

After clearing all the reds, mostly with blacks to follow, Desperques ran out of position from green to brown.

An attempted cut missed and so with it went a possible 140 total clearance.

‘When I potted the last red all the colours were on their spots and nine times out of 10 I would have cleaned up.

‘But I got a bad contact and underhit the green which left me underneath the brown.’

Desperques, 23 this Friday, estimates he has now registered close to 20 ton breaks since joining the league aged 18 and his final frame concluded Ex-Service Chirpers best result in the Image Group Premier Division this season as they went on to beat Sporting Lions 10-2.

Adrian Holley continued his good form with a 51 break, while Colin Gilbert was the sole frame winner for the Lions.

The Chirpers gained a point on Gremlin Galacticos who recovered from losing the first two frames on the black against Sarnian Hotspurs to win 9-3. Adrian Lihou gained the only 3-0 win on the night, a victory that puts him level with Desperques in the aggregates on 15 frames.

North Legionnaires are keeping pace with the leaders after beating Ex-Service Reds 9-3, although at halfway a more sizeable victory looked likely. Rick de Garis and a first outing for Chris Dorey (36 break) put the Legionnaires 6-0 up, but they then shared the remaining frames.

While Shaun Mahy won 2-1, Brett Gallienne wrecked Tom Brock’s unbeaten record by the same score.

Ian Platt is now the sole unbeaten Premier player and he picked up his first 3-0 win of the season against Shaun Goddard.

Platt’s win contributed most to Gremlin X’s 9-3 win over Sarnian Sharks with his teammates all winning 2-1. Gremlin X climbed to fourth place as a result.

In the Skipco First Division, Pat Le Gallez inflicted a first defeat on Rob Gauvain to guide Gremlin B to a 5-3 victory.

It meant a third straight match for Ex-Service Eagles without a win that has seen them slide down the table.

But it is West Legion Wildcats who are firmly rooted at the bottom after crashing to a 7-1 defeat at home to Sporting Alliance.

Simon Le Tissier prevented the whitewash early in the second half after Stewart Hayward and James Hollowell had taken the first four frames for the Alliance.

North Legion Young Ones twice opened a two-frame lead over Ex-Service Potshots, but couldn’t shake off their opponents as all four players drew. Dale Martel claimed the final frame for the Potshots aided by a 28 break.

Clayton Le Noury enjoyed one of his best weeks on the snooker table.

Having made a 29 break in guesting for the Eagles, the following evening he set the highest break in the Banks & Flouquet Second Division for the Hot Butts.

While a fine 45 break left Le Noury reflecting on how much higher it could have been, Scott Bradford was making a 32 break that opened up a 3-1 lead in the top-of-the-table clash against North Social L-Plates.

The Hot Butts held on to win 5-3 with a fortuitous black in the final frame that closes the lead down to a single point.

Elsewhere, an all-North Legion battle saw the Aces come back from 2-0 down to force a draw with their B team, while the Sarnian Breakers capitalised on winning three black balls in the first four frames to beat Gremlin’s Mixed Bunch 6-2.

In Division Three, Gremlin Knights lost the opening frame against Giba Dorios, but then took the next seven to open a four-point lead in the table.

North Social G remain second after beating North Legion United, with the Social’s Darryl Yeates’ break of 27 the best in the division so far.

Sarnian Wannabes overcame playing with just three players for the second time this season to draw with GIBA Two.

Kevin De Carteret ended the first rotation of billiards matches with a handicap victory over Mark Jeffreys that keeps him top of the table.
