JONNY WALLBRIDGE is this year’s Channel Islands Open surf champion. After Saturday’s heats opposite the Watersplash at St Ouen, Jersey, the popular 22-year-old Guernseyman won the championship for the first time on Sunday, explaining that the reason for his success was: ’some lucky waves in the heats on Saturday’.
‘They helped me to put in
some good manouevres. I’ll definitely be back to defend my title next year. The waves here are far better than anything we get at Portinfer.’
Tournament organiser Dave Ferguson said: ‘The standard was consistently high on both days, although Sunday’s conditions were much better than those on Saturday.
‘If you chose the right waves, you could score quite heavily.’
Jersey’s Mark Durbano, meanwhile, who finished second in the masters’ event, would have liked ‘the surf to be a bit bigger, for the more experienced guys’.
‘But these were good conditions for many of the juniors.’
In all, the contest attracted 50 competitors and following his success in winning the Guernsey Open a fortnight ago and now these championships, Wallbridge will be the CI team’s number one seed in the European Championships in 2007.
