FAIR weather made way for some competitive yacht racing over the last two months. Up to 24 boats in three classes battled it out in seven races in the Guernsey Yacht Club Dunnell-Robertson Winter Points Series.
Martin Ozard and Steve Morris’s crew aboard X-Cellarator were clear victors in the racing class.
The X332 won every race apart from the second, in which they had to settle for joint first with Mike Bennett’s Ker 113, SpanKer.
The latter took line honours and finished 12 minutes and 34 seconds ahead of X-Cellarator but, coincidently, both clocked 1hr 29min. 1sec. after handicap. It was SpanKer’s best performance of the season.
As always, it dominated the fleet on the water and took line honours in six out of seven races.
But after handicap, it was placed second overall with two seconds and a third as its best races finishes.
The five-strong Melges fleet shared the Class One starts and courses but showed why they deserve a class of their own. They were the first five finishers after handicap out of all the fleet in two races.
Simon Henning’s White Rabbit again stole the show after winning five and coming second in the other two races.
There were no major surprises in the cruisers.
Veteran skipper Jim Nicolle added another trophy to his extensive collection after helming Mustard Mitt II to a string of second places, one win and a third.
John Falla’s Swan 36 Banjaard took line honours in all six of the races he entered. But, with his unfavourable handicap, he had to settle for fifth place overall.
But perhaps the best performance of the season was by John Squires aboard Ohlson 29 Haven Gem.
The rising star of the cruising fleet achieved two wins and a third place in the five races he entered and clinched fourth place overall.
