L’Ancresse hole-in-one completes Ken’s set

KEN TUCKNOTT has completed an amazing treble of a hole-in-one on every Guernsey course. The 14-handicap’s ace at the 18th at L’Ancresse on Saturday morning during a Winter Four-ball League match was his fifth since taking up the game 13 years ago.

Included in his collection are holes in one at St Pierre Park and La Grande Mare as well as ones in England and France.

The former St Pierre Park captain appears to be something of a good luck charm, and not just for himself, when on the course.

‘I have also seen a few other people get them. It is sheer luck when they go in,’ Tucknott said.

‘Usually it requires a good shot, but I remember one guy at St Pierre Park got one by hitting it all along the ground.

‘It is a nice feeling when they go in. It is a different buzz from winning a competition.’

While many golfers go a lifetime without achieving the ultimate shot, Tucknott had to wait a mere ‘five or six years’ for his latest offering.

‘I was quite lucky because the breeze was behind us and that makes it a fairly straightforward hole,’ said the man who chose a nine iron to reach the back-right pin position.

‘On that hole you can go from a wedge to a driver [depending on the wind direction] so a bit of good judgement is required and luckily enough I got it right this time.’

Having started their match at the 10th, the shot put Tucknott and his partner, Alan Collenette, three up in their match, which they went on to win.

‘I think Alan was particularly pleased because it was only our second win this season,’ said Tucknott.

‘In saying that, we have lost only one. We have halved a lot of them and we usually have a good match.’

Apparently the clubhouse was quite busy afterwards so several other golfers were pleased to share Tucknott’s feat as well and he was grateful for the £5 ‘insurance’ that is paid to the club to help in such situations.

One person who might not have been quick in offering congratulations, though, was his son, Paul.

He has apparently become somewhat frustrated by his father’s penchant for aces.

‘He is always annoyed when I get one. We started playing together when he was 12 and I was about 50 and he has never had one whereas I have had five,’ said Tucknott senior.

His playing partner, who is the L’Ancresse GC competition secretary, believes Tucknott might be the first player to achieve the Guernsey ‘triple crown’.

‘Could this be a first? We thought it might well be, unless your readers know otherwise,’ Collenette said.
