Business Oscars set to be a glittering occasion

THERE are high expectations for an excellent Awards for Achievement event this evening. The 21st annual event takes place at Beau Sejour as a celebration of local industry and community achievements.

Commerce and Employment deputy minister Carla McNulty Bauer said yesterday that she was really looking forward to the evening, which she said was the highlight of the year in her social calendar.

The event is endorsed by the department.

Minister Stuart Falla is not in the island this week and in his absence Deputy McNulty Bauer is responsible for the Business Guernsey arm of the department.

‘It’s a fantastic event which gets better by the year. It is wonderful to have such a celebration of local business and industries all under one roof.’

The action starts at 7pm, with a champagne reception followed by the keynote speech, this year from former Olympic champion Lord Sebastian Coe, who was instrumental in securing the Games for London in 2012.

As well as the Guiton Guernsey Ambassador of the Year, categories include best small, medium and large businesses, as well as the coveted Business of the Year title.

There is also an award for excellence in training, from the Institute of Directors and Guernsey Training Agency, as well as the Specsavers Lifetime Achievement Trophy.

Deputy McNulty Bauer said she loved the celebration of business success in the island.

The evening has been staged by CMA Public Relations.

Event organiser Alex Bridle said it was the culmination of at least six months’ planning for the company and one to which the whole team was looking forward.

‘Since this year’s awards were launched in September, we have been working with sponsors, Commerce and Employment and all those who entered the business and community awards,’ she said.

‘We have again managed to keep the finalists for the business awards under wraps until this evening, but we were impressed by the number and quality of entrants from across a wide range of sectors.’

Tonight’s gala dinner and awards also marks CMA’s long association with the event, having introduced it in 1986.

It has grown from its humble origins of 50 people at St Pierre Park to a sell-out this year of almost 800 people.

‘This event has been nicknamed the モBusiness Oscarsヤ in the past and I’m sure that tonight it will live up to its billing.’
