Christmas-y look to hosts’ image

Rhodes have announced their mascot for the summer’s NatWest Island Games, the cheeky and lovable little deer, Rhodelios. Aaron Scoones has been asking around at what island sports stars think of him, or is it a her? Alan Myers, 15, College of FE student and island boxer: ‘I don’t reckon it should be a deer. I don’t think of a deer when I think of Rhodes.

‘It should be a Greek soldier or something like that.’

Peter Bridgeman, the island’s director of squash: ‘It looks like a Christmas reindeer. If you asked a kid what is that they wouldn’t know what it is. It looks like it’s made of Playdo.’

Andy Stephens, 25, gardener and island basketball team member for Rhodes: ‘You’re having a laugh. It looks like a Christmas reindeer.

‘I don’t know what to say about it, I’m not impressed. When I think of Faliraki, it should be a bottle of vodka with arms and legs coming out of it or something cartoony.’

Adam Farish, 29, youth worker and island basketballer: ‘Is Rhodes famous for a deer? Is it Rhodes’ biggest export?

‘Also putting elios on the end of a word doesn’t help with Greek stereotyping. Is that the final draft?

‘If it’s inflatable I can see the point of it.’

Donna Brehaut, 17, Grammar School student and island netball player: ‘It’s alright but is it a Christmas thing? I don’t know what it is.

‘I think Daniel the Donkey is better.’

Jeff Stuart, College of Further Education sports lecturer and the island’s basketball player-coach: ‘It reminds me of an inflatable you’d take on a stag do. I’m looking forward to see how they a guy inside it for the Games.’
