Crunch time in race for top honours

SAVILLS and Nashcopy Red both warmed up with a win before their OSA Recruitment title decider next Friday. The league leaders produced steady volleyball through their match with NRGI to register a fairly comfortable victory although the second set was a tight affair.

With too many Savills spikes either finding the net or flying out of the back court, their opponents were able to capitalise and some excellent play by Gemma Mauger helped to boost the confidence of the whole team.

At 16-14 up, Savills called a timeout and that unsettled NRGI, who lost their way and managed only a further two points in that set.

However, against a team of such vast experience, NRGI should be justifiably proud of their efforts.

Savills sorted themselves out in the third set and with a better team understanding and Louise Langlois pounding the spikes through the defence, it was over far too quickly.

NRGI coach Richard Skipper was very pleased with his team’s display.

‘This was our final outing of the season and I feel that the players have come a long way in the past few weeks,’ he said.

‘Their confidence has improved twofold and we have been able to take some real positives from our final three outings this season.’

NashCopy Red faced their second team and enjoyed a comfortable win against a team who have introduced several new players throughout the season.

Despite the efforts of Lisa Dowinton, the Whites struggled with the serving of the Reds and they were constantly under pressure.

Newcomer Lara Snell played well for the Whites with some consistently good digging, but they still lost in a little under an hour.

There was another inter-club clash with ASL 1 overcoming their second team, although the latter certainly put up a good fight and if they’d had the advantage of their full squad, the scoreline could well have been different.

Nicky Scott and Sonia Hewitt were impressive for the first and second teams respectively in a match that went to four sets.

With the prospect of play-offs in both social divisions, Royal Bank of Canada and Kingspin pulled out all the stops to beat their opposition and with it take their respective titles.

RBC beat Doyle Motors Bruisers in a tight game, despite winning in straight sets.

DF Cave Juniors secured second with a victory over Generali.

In Social Two, HSBC needed to beat Kingspin to force a play-off, but in a very exciting three-set match, the latter took the decider to give them the title in their first season.
