NORTHERN TRUST beat Close Private Bank in the final of the Business League competition organised by the Guernsey Small-bore Rifle Club. In an exciting and tense encounter at the Mont Arrive indoor range, the scores were tied at 394 after the highest-scoring target for each individual had been counted.
However, on countback, taking into account individuals’ second targets, Northern Trust triumphed 387 to 385.
Close had done exceptionally well to reach the final in their first year of being in the competition.
They were brimming with confidence after a morale-boosting victory in their semi-final match over Credit Suisse, who have won the league before. They carried that confidence through to the final.
Each of the four-man teams shot two targets from 15 yards, with their highest score counting towards their team’s total.
After the first set of targets, Close had opened up a narrow lead after some excellent shooting by James Rouget, who scored 100, and Guy Brown.
With the pressure mounting, Northern Trust managed to move ahead, especially after a 100 and 99 from Mat Ogier and Steve Evans.
The winning team captain, Evans, was presented with the Business League shield by honorary life member of the Guernsey Small-bore Rifle Club David Jory and the winning team members received engraved whisky glasses.
Close received whisky glasses to commemorate of the occasion.
The shoulder-to-shoulder final was the climax of a season-long league which had started in October.
Eight teams took part and were split into two different divisions.
Each shot against the others in their division over the season. Division A was made up of Credit Suisse, BWCI Group, Winter Palmer & Denziloe and Wallace Barnaby while B comprised Northern Trust, Close, Guernsey Post and Collins Stewart.
Credit Suisse and Northern Trust won their respective division with BWCI Group and Close finishing second.
Beginners with no previous shooting experience were encouraged to come along and form a team with their work colleagues as part of companies’ social club events. Many of the team members were trying the sport for the first time.
This was the fifth year the club had organised such a competition. Previous winners are Wallace Barnaby (twice), Babbe Le Pelley Tostevin, Credit Suisse and Northern Trust.
