GUERNSEY could finish as high as fourth in London Three South-West. The Sarnians have won five of their last six games, including Saturday’s 19-3 victory away to Effingham & Leatherhead to secure mid-table safety.
If they defeat second-placed Dorking in the final round of league matches on Saturday 14 April, they could rise as many as three places from their current spot of seventh, from which they cannot fall.
‘We would need results to go our way, but to finish fourth would certainly be a step forward from last year,’ said Guernsey captain Andy Bailey.
‘It is nice to get momentum going towards the end of the season when you have a big game [the Siam Cup] to look forward to.
‘There is no doubt that when you are chopping and changing your team, it is hard to keep consistency, so it has helped to have been able to field a fairly settled side of late.’
Guernsey started slowly against Effingham & Leatherhead and, despite playing with the wind at their backs, failed to score in the first half.
However, the Sarnians moved through the gears after the break and tries from Darren Jones, Jordan Reynalds and Dan Taylor-Edwards plus two Nick Barton conversions gave them a comfortable win.
‘We had the wind in the first half but we were just not on the money at all and were lucky to be only 3-0 down,’ Bailey said.
‘In the second half, though, we clicked and played some really good rugby. They had the strong wind at their back but they were never out of their own half.
‘It was a really solid squad performance. We used everyone off the bench and everyone played their part in the victory.’
