Institute gives bursary backing

TWO aspiring human resources professionals will have the opportunity to sit one of two recognised qualifications for free. They will be backed by the Guernsey branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, which has launched a bursary scheme.

The two students can choose to undertake the certificate in personnel practice or the certificate in training practice.

Taught through the College of Further Education, the one-year courses can be completed alongside a full-time job.

Both are foundation-level programmes at an equivalent to NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in personnel support.

‘While many students receive study support from their employers, this is not the case for all students who then have to fund themselves,’ said CIPD chairman Karen Martin, the senior HR business partner at Royal Bank of Canada.

‘In line with our mandate to promote lifelong learning and the importance of good people-management skills in the workplace, this seemed an ideal way to encourage students to take up a career in human resources.’

The courses start in September. Those who complete them will be eligible for associate membership of the CIPD.

The bursaries will cover tuition fees, a year’s membership of the branch and a key textbook.

CIPD committee member Hayley Gaudion completed the CPP course last summer.

She has gone on to take a masters in human resource management and is currently halfway through the two-year course. As associate vice-president of human resources at FRM Investment Management, she looks after 27 staff.

‘The CPP seemed the obvious choice as it would introduce me to a wide range of practical skills required in my position,’ said the 26-year-old.

‘The course enhanced my personal, academic and professional development and also allowed me to network with other HR

professionals, many of whom are now very good friends.’

She said it provided a broad platform in personnel and was an ideal stepping stone to further study.
