GILLINGHAM POOLS took home a gold award at the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, held recently in Brighton. Its entry was the best in the residential outdoor concrete pool up to £35,000 category.
The annual awards are staged by the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association - the UK watchdog for the industry’s building standards.
They are based on design and technical excellence and are open to pools of all sizes and in all price categories.
Gillingham Pools of Portinfer, Vale, won the award for an installation in the grounds of a property overlooking Portelet.
The client’s brief was to take full advantage of the stunning view afforded from his garden terrace.
The site posed huge logistical difficulties. More than 100 tonnes of concrete had to be transported half a mile to the site in a one-tonne dumper truck and unloaded and laid by hand.
To maximise the setting, Gillingham Pools constructed special features such as an infinity edge. A swim jet was also fitted for exercise.
The pool and adjacent spa were finished in Quartzon Royal Blue plaster, which reflects sunlight. The patio is made of Italian porcelain tiles.
Managing director Richard Gillingham said: ‘It really is a unique pool and totally in keeping with its surroundings. The customer is absolutely delighted, which in a sense is reward enough, but it is always great to receive recognition from our peers and particularly for an installation of which we are very proud.’
Established 20 years ago, Gillingham Pools is a family-run business with Mr Gillingham and his wife, Audrey, at the helm alongside son and daughter-in-law Geoff and Sonia. The company does work across the Channel Islands as well as on the south coast of England and in France.
With a team of 12, it installs on average 20-25 pools a year.
Mr Gillingham said credit was due to the whole team for outstanding customer service and the high standards achieved.
‘I am immensely proud of our highly-skilled team of craftsmen, who always display the highest degree of integrity and professionalism.’
