Port City 2, Sylvans 1, after extra-time
PORT CITY staged a spirited fightback to win the Rouget Cup for the first time in the club’s history last night. The final against Sylvans at Northfield was an excellent advertisement for the Railway League with plenty of endeavour, no shortage of entertainment and even an extraordinary triple back-heel piece of showboating from the victors to marvel at.
The westerners certainly played their part in a gripping contest and they deservedly led at half-time.
With strikers Kevin Andrews and Chris Bisson having both come close to breaking the deadlock in the opening half-hour, the latter eventually found the net on 32min., sneaking in to slot home after Andrews and defender Darren Cooley had accidently collided, causing a nasty clash of heads.
Goalkeeper Toby Reuss kept the gap to one with saves from Matt Drillot and Andrews and he would later perform more heroics for his side in extra-time, denying substitute Clive Bateman and Tristan Robilliard.
City came out for the second-half full of desire and they were soon back on level terms as Lee Gallienne rifled in a superb volley from the edge of the box - a goal to grace any occasion.
Although Port enjoyed the better of the second 45, they had to wait until two minutes into the extra 30 for their winner.
It came when striker Roy Leonard and Sylvans’ Mark Carre and Andy McCarthy all converged on Kev Davies’ through ball and it was the defender who seemed to get the decisive touch that took the ball past his keeper and into the net.
