News from the Guernsey Press

Double your money time for the arts

THE arts will get a financial boost when a new trust is established at the end of the year. It will work along similar lines to the Guernsey Sports Commission.

‘We’re looking to have money from government matched by money from the private sector,’ said Culture and Leisure chief officer Dave Chilton.

‘That would double the amount of money going into the arts, which will be good news all around.’

The department also wants to appoint an assistant to work alongside arts development officer Joanna Littlejohns.

Already this year, the second Arts Alive event has got people talking about the arts, said Culture and Leisure minister Peter Sirett.

Later in the year the department will open Castle Cornet again for eight Castle Nights music events.

‘They were nice relaxing informal evenings that people enjoyed,’ said Deputy Sirett.

‘I think they were probably one of the most successful things we’ve tried. They brought people to the castle that might not have been for several years.’

The Arts Trust would follow in a line of successful public-private partnerships the department has established.

These include St James and Friends of Guernsey Heritage.

‘I think we’re lucky we have built these up,’ said Deputy Sirett.

‘They stand us in good stead as we move forward, helping us to provide what we might find difficult in the future.’
