Wide backing for Education review

TEACHERS and lecturers are looking forward to contributing to a review of education management in the island. Sean McManus, local spokesman for the National Union of Teachers, said that the ongoing saga of Jane Stephens’s unfair-dismissal case had inevitably drawn valuable resources and manpower away from the administration of education.

Now the department had lost the case, he said teachers wanted to work with it to move forward, particularly on terms and conditions of service for members.

Mr McManus said that unions had highlighted shortcomings in procedures at Education for a decade, particularly those dealing with discipline matters and appeals.

Teaching unions have already supported an external and independent assessment of the management of the service, recommended by a senior judge in June.

‘We pointed out then that the Education Department would benefit from regular and robust external inspection,’ said Mr McManus.

‘Such a process would enable the department to demonstrate its continuing strengths and accountability to parents and to the States.’

* An employment tribunal ruled last week that the department had unfairly sacked Mrs Stephens from her role as head teacher of Le Rondin School in January 2006.
