THE TRACK is going to host the island’s biggest karting competition. The Formula 2e2 Challenge is an inter-company endurance championship knockout.
The format is similar to the famous Le Mans 24 race, but competitors will race for only an hour with teams striving to complete the most laps.
At present 42 have entered and there is space for more. The competition is the brainchild of 2e2’s Marc Laine.
‘The response has been fantastic,’ he said. ‘The bigger we can make the event the better. The way it’s going, I can see it being an annual event.’
There are five first round heats with the first on Wednesday 16 May and the final one on Wednesday 13 June.
There will be 10 teams in each, with the five with the most laps after the hour going through to the semi-finals.
Teams will be made up of four drivers and each will have to have been at the wheel during the hour-long heat.
There will also be a 30 minutes’ practice and a qualifying session before the heats.
Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams in each heat and there will be a special one for the overall champions. Food and refreshments will be provided for the competitors.
There will be a separate competition for the 10 drivers who have achieved the quickest laps. They will face each other in a 30-lap sprint race at the finals.
The racing will take place in Karting Guernsey’s new Sodi machines. They have just taken delivery of 10 which can be driven in excess of 45mph.
‘It’s definitely going to be good fun,’ said organiser Matt Ford, of Karting Guernsey. ‘The Sodi karts are so much quicker than the old ones.’
