A FARMER died after a 42-year-old tractor in poor condition flipped on top of him, an inquest heard yesterday. Perryn Dorey, 63, died at Le Lorier Farm, Rue du Lorier, St Saviour’s, on Friday 2 March.
Inspector Paul Yabsley told the hearing that Mr Dorey lived with his family at Rue du Val, St Peter’s, and rented the farm from his stepmother.
Mr Dorey had left his home at 2.30pm that day and returned to the farm. At 3.10 an employee, Geoff Fallaize, went there. He shouted to Mr Dorey but got no answer. He went into a barn and found Mr Dorey under the upturned tractor.
An ambulance arrived at 3.30 and medical examiner Dr Ray pronounced Mr Dorey dead at 4.10.
Statements by accident investigator Sergeant Martyn Bougourd and police vehicle examiner Geoff Le Page were produced to the court.
Mr Le Page confirmed that the brakes of the tractor were seized off and the clutch was also seized. It was permanently engaged.
Sergeant Bougourd said that age and lack of maintenance meant the tractor was in generally poor condition.
It had not been used for some time, which was probably why the parts had seized.
The tractor had been driven forward, struck a plough and had flipped over backwards, pinning the driver beneath.
The machine was in low gear and Mr Dorey would not have had time to stop the engine or jump clear before it hit the plough.
Consultant pathologist Dr Catherine Chinyama said Mr Dorey had suffered injuries to his chest that had compromised his breathing.
Assistant-Magistrate Philip Robey ruled that these injuries had been the cause of the death and recorded a verdict of accidental death.
He expressed the court’s deepest sympathies to Mr Dorey’s friends and relatives.
