SHIP & FLY is to take over management of Isle of Sark Shipping. Since 1 August 2005, Alderney Shipping has held that responsibility, but the two-year-contract will not be renewed.
Isle of Sark Shipping director Bruce Wallace said there had been competition to win the contract.
‘A number of people submitted tenders, including Alderney Shipping, and the shareholders and directors believed that the best offer on the table was from Ship & Fly,’ he said.
‘It’s a lifeline service and it’s important that we make the right decision.
‘We are extremely excited about the plans that Ship & Fly has for developing the route.’
The matter was still subject to contractual agreement being reached, but Mr Wallace did not expect any problem.
In a statement, Ship & Fly chief executive officer Max Carling said the appointment was an important step in the establishment of his company as an emerging force in local and international shipping management. He was not available for further comment yesterday.
Alderney Shipping managing director Bruno Kay-Mouat said he was disappointed with the decision.
‘Passenger carrying since we have been involved speaks for itself,’ he said. ‘Passengers numbers have gone up, fares have stayed the same, there have been more specials and the company’s been profitable.
‘We turned Isle of Sark Shipping around. We are grateful to the staff of Isle of Sark Shipping who supported us the whole time and worked hard and the staff of Alderney Shipping who have also contributed to the welfare of Sark in many ways.’
Isle of Sark Shipping is wholly owned by the people of Sark.
