‘We sympathise but must have a cemetery’

OPPOSITION to a new cemetery in a Castel lane is growing. ‘We will fight this,’ said Janet James, supported by Rue de la Croix neighbours at last night’s parish meeting. ‘We have written to the Environment Department rejecting the proposals and we will not let this stand.’

Cemeteries Committee president Nick Dorey said he empathised with the residents and that proposals for another field had also been submitted for planning consent.

‘Rue de la Croix was offered to us by the States and the owner of a field in Rue de la Cache has agreed to sell, if we get permission,’ he said.

‘Finding land has been extremely difficult - we have been given the task to locate a new cemetery and that is what we have to do.’

The ecclesiastical meeting has been postponed until 21 May because sections of the agenda were omitted in La Gazette Officielle.

Also at the secular meeting, Barry Paint secured a landslide victory in the douzenier election.

The 59-year-old narrowly missed out on becoming a deputy for the parish in 2000, but last evening won a seat on the douzaine for the next 18 months by 49 votes to 15.

His opponent, Sylvia Lawrence, parish clerk of 16 years, would have been the first female to fill the position.

Mr Paint, married to Diane and with two children, said he was extremely happy. ‘I have wanted to get more involved in parish affairs as I have got older,’ said the former Les Beaucamps student.

Mr Paint also sits on the Sunday trading licence appeals panel.

He qualified as a master mariner in 1977 and is still a St Sampson’s marine pilot.

He has set up a charity to clothe and school children in Vietnam and now sponsors 18 youngsters’ education. The charity also provides clean water for 137 families in a nearby village.

Mr Paint, who is fluent in Guernsey French, completes the term of office of Derek Le Feuvre who has moved out of the parish.
