Cabbies break ranks over tariff increases

TAXI drivers are split on a proposal to put up fares. Dissent broke out in the ranks after the Guernsey Taxi Owners’ Federation applied to the Environment Department to raise tariffs by an average of 5.9%.

Some drivers said they had not been consulted and did not support the application.

‘It’s ill conceived, the timing is wrong and it will alienate what is dying trade anyway,’ said one cabbie, who did not want to be named.

‘At least a dozen drivers had no idea this application was going in and it’s a shambles.

‘It would have been far better for the industry to swallow whatever happens during the next eight months and make any decision after we know how much will go on the cost of fuel next year to cover road tax.

‘That would have had a far better public perception.’

About one third of drivers are members of the federation. Taxi plate holders can raise issues with Environment or apply for rises as individuals, but the department will consult with only the one body.

‘Most federation committee members don’t work nights and don’t take bookings so they don’t represent the industry as a whole,’ said the driver.

‘The industry has become fragmented and any association should be recognised by everybody.’

Federation secretary Aaron Rabet would not comment, other than to say a statement would be issued today.

* Interested parties have until 17 May to make written comments to the department in response to the proposal.
