Priaulx pays for qualifying error

STARTING the day as joint leader of the world touring car championship, Andy Priaulx lost ground on his main rivals in Zandvoort yesterday. Having qualified eighth on the grid, the double world champion finished in that position in race one won by Frenchman Alain Menu to enjoy pole for the second race.

But he was unable to take advantage and slipped to fifth in a race won by Italian Seat driver Gabrieli Tarquini.

Priaulx’s main early-season title rivals had a slightly better day.

Brazilian Augusto Farfus was the biggest mover with good points for fifth and second.

German Jorg Muller failed to score in the opener but was third in the next.

Priaulx had earlier put his hand up for qualifying as low as he did.

‘My fault. I’m sorry,’ were his first words after a mistake on the final lap of the session cost him half-a-second.

‘The right rear got on to the sand and the grip went,’ he added.
