THE clock is ticking down to the start of the 2007 Specsavers Guernsey Youth Games. On Saturday at Foote’s Lane, deputies will lead the teams representing the island’s seven voting districts.
‘It is my first time at the Games and I am delighted to be taking part,’ said Al Brouard, who will be the team leader for West.
‘There is so much talent on the island and it is initiatives such as this that can really help youngsters to develop their potential.
‘The Games help to reinforce the message to our youth that you can do or achieve anything you want to if you are prepared to put in the effort and work required.’
At the previous Games in 2005, more than 500 children from Years 5 and 6 took part in 12 sports in front of several hundred proud parents and friends packed into the Garenne Stand.
The sports were basketball, netball, volleyball, squash, badminton, table tennis, tennis, athletics, cricket, hockey, rugby and football.
Budding young sportsmen and women are again back in training with each team having a coach assigned for the different activities.
Along with Deputy Brouard, the team leaders are Mike O’Hara - South-East, Chris Brock - St Peter Port North, Carla McNulty Bauer - St Peter Port South, Sam Maindonald - St Sampson’s, Duncan Staples - Vale and Jonathan Le Tocq - Castel.
