Day of liberation is recalled in play

A LARGE audience at Pensioner’s Parlour was treated to a time-warp performance portraying the events of 9 May 1945. The play by the Guernsey History in Action Company looked at the day the island was liberated through the flashbacks of a woman who was a young girl at the time.

More than 100 people crammed into the tent outside HMV to watch the 30-minute play.

Stella Graham, co-writer and producer, said it was nice to be able to portray the main character of Margerie in present and past tense.

‘It was lovely to be able to have the older Margerie on stage recollecting her past while at the same time having a younger actress play out the scenes,’ she said.

‘People hopefully got a flavour of what it was like on Liberation Day for the people that were actually here.’

She said the company was delighted to be involved in the celebrations.

‘It’s brilliant to be here performing. A lot of the company were here at the time. Some stayed and some were evacuated.

‘I’m so pleased with how it went. You are always worried about how it will come together but it was meant to be a snapshot in history and I hope people enjoyed it.’

The play included the actual speech by Winston Churchill in which he said: ‘And our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed.’

‘We tried to keep it as historically correct as possible.’

Eleanor Laine, 18, played the part of the young Margerie, who is overcome with joy at the prospect of being freed.

‘It was really good fun and I didn’t expect such a big crowd,’ said the College of FE student.

‘It was quite daunting but everyone seemed to have a really good time.

‘Liberation Day is such an important day for everyone and it was great to be involved.’

Audience member Maggie Redgrave said she thought the play was excellent.

‘Everyone in the audience really enjoyed it and it was lovely to be able to come and support it and be proud of Guernsey.’
