News from the Guernsey Press

Musical youth

THE High School Musical took to the streets yesterday. The Guernsey Youth Theatre production of the Disney show was performed on the Albert Pier.

Director Andrew Beachom said it had been a long day.

‘The only worry we had was the weather, we were very concerned. At about 8am it was 50/50 whether it would go on or not,’ he said.

It had been challenge performing outside.

‘But the cast have been brilliant, got through it really well. We had to adjust the sound because they weren’t used to hand-held mics, but they couldn’t use lapel mics because of the wind.’

There was a cast of 65 aged between 12 and 22.

‘It’s great to have this opportunity to do this and let the kids show off their talent,’ said Mr Beachom.

‘I think it went really well, I’ve had a very positive feedback from the people I’ve spoken to in the crowd. it went down well at the Performing Arts Centre, but to transport it from theatre to out here in this weather was a bit daunting.’

He added the theatre would like to perform again outdoors at Liberation Day.

‘The kids loved it, you could see that, they had a great time and that’s what it’s all about.’

Those watching the show were impressed.

‘I saw the performance at the new Arts Centre, it was really good, so I came to see it again - it’s very professional,’ said Sharon Charlton.

Her daughter Liz, 16, was in the show.

‘The sound’s really good, very good quality considering they are outside and people seem to be enjoying it.’

Julie McMonagle was watching 17-year-old daughter Livvy take part.

‘I think there’s a lot of talent in the island. It’s great this is on, great for the kids because they make so many friends from doing this. It’s very professional, A lot of time and effort went into this, my daughter certainly enjoyed it.’
