THE Lt-Governor, Sir Fabian Malbon, was a contender for the April Fish of the Month competition, but like so many entrants his top catch had nothing on Raymond Fallaize’s magnificent 6-9-7 couch’s sea bream. Fallaize’s scored an amazing 146.27%, when compared with the current 4-8-2 boat-caught record.
This gave him the Shakespeare Monthly prize for the best overall fish and the Royal Fathomers AC Tankard for the top boat-caught specimen.
In any other month John Dunne would have won the top awards for his new shore record three-bearded rockling, which weighed 2-11-4 and scored 101.46%.
Obviously he had no chance to challenge Fallaize’s outstanding catch, but he did win the J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the best shore-caught fish.
Both of the runner-up prizes of Bucktrout’s Bass Beers went to flatfish captors. Mark Tostevin scored 84.71% for his 25-10-0 turbot, while Bernard Flouquet’s 8-7-0 brill was worth 62.21%.
Young angler David Dyson won the Aval du Creux Monthly Tankard for the best fish by a junior with his 6-12-6 boat-caught ballan wrasse which scored 84.01%.
The unsuccessful entries included the 18-10-0 turbot caught on a sandeel bait at Banc au Nord by the governor, whose score of 61.57% was not quite enough to take him into the prize list.
Steven Torode’s 10-1-13 shore-caught bass which scored 54.98% and young David Dyson’s second entry of the month a 3-5-5 shore-caught ballan wrasse worth 38.26% completed the list of unsuccessfuls.
RICHARD EXALL was crowned as the club shore champion at the annual dinner and presentation night of the Bailiwick Bass Club held at the Rocquettes Hotel.

The evening was compered by club president Nigel Mahy, who had special words of thanks for the club sponsors including Quayside Marine who support the Open Bailiwick Bass Challenge, due to be held this year from 15 to 18 June, Collenette Jones for their help with the monthly awards and Western Tackle Supplies who support the club’s junior open.
The president reflected on a successful year and there were special words of appreciation for Des Fletcher, although he had resigned after many years as club secretary, he continued to support the club, maintaining its website and fulfilling the fish recorder’s duties.

Mark Gillson is third, he boated a 3-3-13 whiting and a 14-9-8 turbot to score 109.93%.

Now in its third year the league remains very popular. During April, 23 members weighed in a total of 41 qualifying fish.
Other outstanding fish caught were an 18-1-1 turbot by Ian Torode and a 10-4-5 pollack by Lee Gillot.
SEVEN shore-caught and three boat-caught bass were entered in the Guernsey Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society competitions in April.
Simon Russell tipped the shore catch list with fish of 5-0-0, 3-13-0 and 3-10-0, 12-7-0 in all.
Close on his heels was Brian Montgomery with a total weight of 11-10-0, the individual specimens weighing 4-11-0, 3-8-0 and 3-7-0.
Tom Brock only landed one bass, but it weighed 6-7-0 and gave him best fish of the month.
Despite having a blank month, Karl Le Prevost retained the top spot in the shore championship. Similarly Paul Clark recorded a zero but hung on to his second place.
Montgomery and Russell rose to third and fourth positions by virtue of their April successes.
The first entries were received for the club’s boat championship. Paul Clark topped the catches with a 7-15-0 fish, while Dan Slimm and Rob Jennings senior both had fish of 4-4-0.
The club’s April competition was won by Montgomery with his 3-7-0 fish.
