CONTROVERSIAL referee Graham Poll who dramatically decided to quit the Premiership after yesterday’s Portsmouth and Arsenal clash, will be the guest speaker at the Guernsey Football Association’s presentation evening next month. The 43-year-old could carry on refereeing in the top flight for another six years, but he has walked away from the game saying he has become fed up with all the abuse that goes with being the number one official in English football.
He was publicly ridiculed for his error during last summer’s World Cup when he showed three yellow cards to Croatia’s Josip Simunic.
The gaffe saw Poll step down from international football.
This season, controversy has followed the Hertfordshire official when he sent off Chelsea captain John Terry during their defeat at Tottenham.
The Chelsea players claimed Poll said that they needed to be ‘taught a lesson’ but he was cleared of any wrongdoing by the authorities. The GFA presentation dinner is on 21 June at Crabby Jacks.
