MURATTI footballers will be absent for the second Healthspan Cross-Sport Challenge at Foote’s Lane tonight. But members of Guernsey’s victorious Siam Cup team will be battling it out against some of the island’s other top stars in a selection of track and field events.
They include 100m, 200m, 800m, long and high jumps, shot put and javelin and 4×100m relay.
In the men’s challenge, the sport of rugby will be up against hockey, basketball and cricket. In the women’s, hockey and netball are confirmed and could be joined by football.
GIAAC development officer and Commonwealth Games runner Lee Merrien, who is the brains behind the event, said it was disappointing the footballers would not be competing this evening but still believes competition will be fierce.
‘They enjoyed it last time but there was not enough interest this time, which is a bit of a shame.
‘It would have been good because they won it last time. I’m sure some of the other sports would have liked to have shown they are fitter on a level playing field,’ he said.
It is a fun event but is competitive, with pride at stake.
‘Last year it was pretty successful and as a result other sports wanted to get involved, like cricket and basketball, and they have got on board,’ said Merrien.
‘It’s not very often you will see people from other sports competing against each other, but the events in athletics are characteristic for all these sports.
‘It’s something for everybody and I would like to get more sports involved. It does not have to be about finding the next good athlete,’ he stressed.
The rugby team will include Alex Miller, Cameron Patten, Rob Brazier, James Regnard, Jordan Reynalds and Dave McGall.
Island cricketers trying their luck include Andy Biggins, Blane Queripel, Justin Meades, Kris Moherndl, Tim Duke and Stuart Bisson.
Some teams will be confirmed tonight and Merrien was yesterday considering entering some made up of the island’s junior athletes to bolster the event and give it more depth.
The events start at 6pm and should not last more than two hours.
All spectators are welcome and entry is free of charge.
