STATES-owned land between La Vallette and Havelet is to be smartened up. Environment minister David De Lisle made the announcement at the Chamber of Commerce lunch as he banged the drum for keeping Town’s individuality in the face of an influx of UK retailers into the High Street.
Deputy De Lisle believes landscaping in St Peter Port looks tired and plans to begin its improvement on land managed by the department.
‘One is the stretch from Havelet to La Vallette swimming pools - replanting, ongoing enhancement and rehabilitation of that area with a minimum budget,’ said Deputy De Lisle.
Environment has already launched a tree-planting scheme.
‘The Havelet, La Vallette, project will be another initiative - a beginning to improve States-administered property for the benefit of local people and visitors alike.’
The beauty of Town needed to be safeguarded, he said.
Deputy De Lisle was also concerned about the individuality of St Peter Port.
‘Guernsey has always been known for a variety of local shops along High Street. It has made our Town a very colourful and different place to visit - even Jersey people remark on this aspect of Town - that we have something different and unique to offer,’ said Deputy De Lisle.
‘Yet walking through High Street recently I’ve noticed a lot of local shops being replaced by UK multi-retailers. There’s an imminent danger here in that erosion of individuality is taking place rapidly before our eyes.’
He warned Guernsey’s High Street would be like any other in the UK if action was not taken.
‘This has to be looked into, otherwise Town will not have any Guernsey businesses in future due to high rents pushing locals out of Town and making it difficult for new local retail businesses to set up.’
He said it was important to have a mix.
Deputy De Lisle wanted Commerce and Environment to work together on the issue.
‘It’s incredibly important that we support local independent businesses,’ he said.
‘Just as we protect our green fields, we need to protect our Town.’
