GUERNSEY’S NatWest Island Games competitors will be wearing high-tech uniforms when they compete in Rhodes next month. Sponsored by Fortis Guernsey, the outfits are made of special lightweight fabric designed for the extreme heat that the athletes will experience in the Mediterranean island.
‘Providing the right type of clothing is vital to minimise the health risks associated with exercise in hot conditions,’ said the Guernsey Island Games Association chairperson, Denise Fawcett.
‘We have been careful to follow hot-weather guidelines and have chosen a fabric that minimises heat storage and enhances sweat evaporation. We have moved away from green as the dominant colour and have chosen beige and white with green piping as the colour theme.
‘Medical advice is that lighter colours will be more beneficial in the hot conditions. Instead of the traditional tracksuit we have designed a gilet, knee-length trousers, shorts, T-shirts, polo shirts and sleeveless shirts.’
Josh Gosselin is a fan of the clothing. The 21-year-old Fortis employee will represent Guernsey at the Games in the mountain bike criterium and cross-country events.
‘It’s lightweight and seems to be all right,’ he said.
‘Anything that helps to keep us cool is a good thing.
‘The Games are getting close now and we’re doing our final preparations. It should be good.’
Because of the conditions, competitors and officials will also receive a sun hat and a drawstring bag in which protective sun cream and water can be carried.
Peter Vidamour, chief operating officer of Fortis Guernsey, said the company was proud to continue its relationship with the GIGA.
‘Fortis Guernsey staff members are well known among the island’s sporting community as many have represented the island at the highest level and a number of our staff will be travelling to Rhodes in June,’ he said.
‘We are very pleased with the kit designs and are looking forward to the opening ceremony when the kit will be on display as all the Guernsey competitors and officials march into the arena.’
