THE family of a missing taximan Norman Le Messurier is still hopeful that he will be found. And there have been sightings of the long-serving cabbie, who went missing on Thursday.
Police confirmed yesterday that they had followed up leads without success, including a sighting at Pembroke on Saturday.
Now semi-retired, the 65-year-old taxi driver is one of 10 children: he has five brothers and four sisters.
Brother John, 59, believes Norman is probably still in Guernsey, despite police searches being extended to the UK, Jersey and France.
He is appealing for his brother to return and feels there is a chance that Norman could be walking the cliffs and sleeping in bunkers or outbuildings at night.
‘All the family wants is for him to come home. We have put up posters everywhere hoping that someone will get in touch and say that they have seen him,’ said John.
‘I honestly don’t know why he has gone missing.
‘He just needs to know that he won’t get into trouble if he gets in touch.
‘A number of the family have walked the cliff paths themselves looking for Norman.’
John’s wife, Karen, said the family believed her brother-in-law might be suffering from some sort of depression and not be entirely sure as to what was happening.
‘We are wondering whether Norman might be walking around in a daze, not knowing what he’s doing,’ she said.
‘We understand there was a sighting of him at Pembroke and we wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.
‘He loves to walk the cliffs and his favourite spot is Pleinmont.
‘He needs to know that he’s done nothing wrong.
‘We are asking anyone who sees Norman to befriend him and keep him with them while they call the police.’
The missing Vale resident, who first drove a taxi in 1964, is well known for his friendly manner towards colleagues and clients and was last seen wearing grey trousers and a beige gilet.
He is described as being 5ft 10in. and of slim build, with brown hair, greying at the sides.
Detective Sergeant Andy Whitton, who is leading the investigation, said further air searches of Guernsey’s cliffs had taken place yesterday but with no luck.
‘We have had numerous sightings of him, which we have followed up, but we have had no luck as of yet.
‘We have informed the UK National Missing Persons’ Bureau, as well as the Jersey and French authorities. The search continues.’
