Family set up website in search for Norman

THE niece of missing semi-retired cabbie Norman Le Messurier has launched a website in a bid to help find her uncle. Claire Le Messurier, 16, set up the site, www.findmyuncle.piczo.com, and said it had already received 300 hits and more than a dozen comments of support from family and friends.

It contains information and a description of Norman and advises what anyone who sees him should do.

Claire, who goes on holiday to France tomorrow with her fiance, Jacques Rowlinson, 16, and his family, said she wanted to help as much as possible.

‘I wanted to do something for him before I went away so that if he is found while I’m in France, he knew I was trying to help.

‘The website has worked well. People have left messages saying they hope I find my uncle and family members are saying they are pleased I’ve done it.’

Despite a number of reported sightings and further air searches yesterday, the semi-retired taxi driver, 65, has still not been seen since last Thursday.

Claire and her brother, Scott, 13, said the disappearance of their uncle had come out of the blue after he had made a successful recovery from a period spent in hospital suffering from depression.

‘He was in hospital towards the end of last year being treated for his depression. He was in for three months and was out at the start of January,’ said Claire.

‘We went to visit him a number of times when he was there and he seemed a lot better when he came out.

‘He started to get in contact with his family a bit more and seemed to realise that was important.

‘He used to give me quite a few lifts in his taxi and whenever he saw me at the petrol station, he used to give me some money to pay for my petrol. And he always told me to be careful and not to have an accident.’

Claire’s father, John Le Messurier, one of Norman’s brothers, still believes he is in Guernsey, but could understand why police had widened their search, as two more of their brothers and three sisters now lived abroad.

‘Graham and Carol both live in Southampton now, so if he did go to the UK, that’s where he’d go. But they’ve not seen or heard anything either,’ said John.

‘We still think he could be in a bunker or an outbuilding along the cliffs, so we are just asking people to keep an eye out for him.’

The missing Vale resident, who first drove a taxi in 1964, is well known for his friendly manner towards colleagues and clients and was last seen wearing grey trousers and a beige gillet. He had been visiting his brother, Gordon, and his wife, Louise.

‘Norman was round theirs visiting on Thursday. He usually did that a couple of times a week, but when we spoke to Gordon and Louise on Friday, they said he didn’t seem like the normal Norman and that’s the last he was seen,’ said John.

Mr Le Messurier is described as being 5ft 10in. and of slim build, with brown hair greying at the sides.

A police spokesman confirmed there had been no further developments in finding him, but that searches and enquiries were continuing.
