Shocked Vazon residents saw and heard nothing

ISLANDERS were left shocked and horrified by last night’s shootings. Michelle Le Pelley lives about 500 metres from the Fort Hommet car park.

‘I was watching TV when I heard all the police cars at around 7.30pm,’ she said.

‘It’s unusual to hear lots of sirens at this end of the island, but there was one police car after another going past, followed by ambulances.

‘I obviously didn’t know what was going on at the time, but then I got a phone call from a friend who told me there had been a shooting.

‘Shortly afterwards, I saw the ambulances leave the scene with a police escort.’

Drinkers in the nearby Vazon Bay Hotel Sports Bar were watching the European Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan when police began to arrive at the headland nearby.

One customer, who did not want to be named, said: ‘Because we were watching the football on television, we didn’t really give much thought to the sirens.

‘But later we heard there had been a shooting just up the road and we were all absolutely shocked.

‘There was all sorts of speculation doing the rounds. Some were saying a man was dead and a woman seriously injured. Others were saying two people had died.’

A 17-year-old Grammar School student, who also asked not to be named, said she and two friends saw up to four ambulances and eight police cars speed past Vazon Bay cafe just after 7.30pm.

‘We come down here most nights just after 7pm. We did not hear any shots or anything like that, but then all these ambulances and police cars came zooming past, one after and another. We walked along the path to see if we could get closer to where they had gone, but an officer stopped us at the edge of Fort Hommet car park and said we weren’t allowed past.’

Crabby Jack’s manager Norberto Alves said no one at the restaurant had any idea as to what had happened.

‘No one here heard anything. Restaurants don’t tend to be quiet places and there are always cars and bikes going past here.

‘Even if we did hear something like a gun we would probably have thought it was something else because it’s not a sound you expect to hear.’
