Classics braved the rain

A MORRIS Traveller was voted best car in the Guernsey Classic Vehicle Club’s annual show. The 12th show was deemed a huge success despite fears that it might have to be cancelled.

At an 11th hour meeting, it was decided to brave the elements and that decision proved a correct one as the weather was largely pleasant for the big crowds who had come to inspect a variety of vintage and classic cars.

John Bichard, communications officer for the club, said he was delighted with the turnout.

‘There was a worry that we were going to have to pull the plug on the whole thing because of the bad weather overnight so we are absolutely thrilled with how it turned out,’ he said.

He thanked all the drivers who had displayed their vehicles.

‘These cars are people’s pride and joy and a lot of them have been out in the bad weather. We are very grateful to them.’

Vehicles from a variety of eras were on display including pre-war, pre-65, classics, motorcycles, scooters, military and future classics.

The future classic section proved very popular with crowds, especially those with young children.

‘The future classics had quite a large group of people near the display throughout the day. Having the cars that will be classics in years to come is another way of bringing people into the show. It’s important to have a wide range of cars here,’ said Mr Bichard.

‘Classic cars are beautiful to look at. I think the modern cars all look the same, but all classics have their own individuality, their own shape and driving style.’

He added the event was a good family day out.

‘It’s been a huge success because we have managed to put on what people wanted to see. People have been speaking to the drivers and learning about the cars so it has been very beneficial for everyone.’
