Site neighbours fear for children

MORE THAN 25 Vale residents say lives will be put at risk by a development near their homes. Nearly all residents of La Hure Mare Road and Les Monmains have signed a petition to highlight the possible impact of extra traffic.

Tower Properties wants to redevelop the Guernsey Coal Distributors site with several commercial buildings and possibly parking for more than 100 vehicles.

If the project goes ahead, residents want the site’s current entrance closed in favour of an alternative at the La Hure Mare end of the site.

‘I’m worried a child will get hurt,’ said mother-of-three Amanda Poole, 36, speaking on behalf of residents. She has lived in Les Monmains for nearly seven years. Others have been in the area for more than 40.

‘My main concerns are the traffic and the noise - this is a lovely, quiet road. I don’t want to stop development, because the yard needs to be tidied, but they do have an alternative entrance and there is no reason for the lorries to come through here,’ she said.

‘There are many times I have had to stop the kids running down the road when lorries are active.

‘We want consultation - the normal people don’t always get heard.’

Neighbours said they have been plagued for years by industrial and commercial activity.

They have largely tolerated noise, dust and traffic and while they do not oppose improvements, they are worried about increased traffic.

Vale deputy Graham Guille has written to the Environment Department on behalf of residents.

A spokesman for Tower Properties said: ‘Nobody has approached us and we suggest Deputy Guille and the residents get hold of us and arrange a meeting as soon as the owner of the site is back in the island. I’m sure they will be more than pleased to meet them.’
