Monthly competitions bring a shower of good scores

SHOOTERS supported the Guernsey Clay Target Shooting Association’s April competitions in good numbers. Both international and domestic disciplines were held with the latter being particularly well supported.

The English skeet, which involves a sequence of targets being launched from each side of a D-shaped layout with seven shooting positions, ended with joint winners.

On a day when conditions were far from ideal, Noel Duquemin and Andy Mahy both broke 22 targets, one ahead of James Rouget.

Some 26 competitors took part in the down-the-line domestic trap. In this, a target is launched at a set elevation, but a random angle, with three points awarded for a first barrel hit and two for a second.

Out of the 75 points available, Colin Marquis and Dave Best dropped only four each to tie for first with Dean Wilson third on 70.

Six out of 21 shooters managed to break the 80% barrier in the sport trap, which involved sequences of clay targets designed to imitate the movement of live quarry ranging from targets rolled along the ground to high, fast, flying ones.

The top score went to Ian Le Maitre with 22 ex 25, followed by Cliff Eborall with 21.

The international disciplines are along similar lines to the domestic shoots, but with targets being presented with greater variations of elevation and angle, at greater speed and with the inclusion of time delays before they are launched.

Graeme Corbin and Andre Carre, with 23 each, were the star performers in the Olympic skeet, just ahead of Duquemin on 22. This score would place the competitors in the A class of international shooters.

Shane Harley produced the quality performance in the automatic ball-trap to post a score of 22, followed by Mick Le Pelley and Ken Laine. Marlene Place was top woman in fourth.
